JOURNEY TO CENTER OF SUCCESS

By John Robert Son

A PROGRESSIVE, PEACEFUL, AND POWERFUL NATION owes its ideal identity from a well-founded society; a well-established society owes its vigour from its community bounded by strong ties of love, unity, and cooperation. A unified society and peaceful community, in a greater sense, settle in a state exhausting all means to achieve the ends for the public good and for the greatest joy of the greatest number of people from an honest and par-excellent leadership. Indeed, if a mass of population can boost up a particular nation, the same population –as an agent of its success can cause its downfall.

There may be a sudden turn of events induced by the masses that may prove to be unfavourable to the nation, and further, may be motivated by the disheartening actions manoeuvred for self interest of people who lead the state. Such kind of mess can be traced from the pages of our history. Saddening as it may seem, but the Philippines as revealed by regional polls, is insistently settling at the bottom-low-spot when it comes to dishonest governance.

Moreover saddling is the fact that our country was once “tiger-strong” economy now lags far behind our neighbouring and progressing Asian economies. What have gone wrong in our country?—the dominion of corruption and indifference, the unfettered propagation on culture of selfishness and self-interest towards rampancy!

As a democratic nation, in these times, that a mean veil enshrouds our national identity, there is an abnormally elevated necessity to offer much of ourselves for our glorious national re-emergence. The restoration of good governance, the revivification of our active participation and vigilance in and for social concern and issues confronting our existence will be a great leap for us all. But to arrive at such realization, we should start first with humble ways.

As we reside in each of our communities, there arise significant problems which need to be properly addressed—inadequate basic services are at the uppermost. What if there is a poor system of provision of services in our community? What if you had the chance to tour that hapless community of yours? As you travelled within your community, you can hardly concentrate because of the obnoxious, hideously blackish emission from the nearby factories.

Turning to your left, the feeling of disgust crawled into your body upon seeing the unheeded immensity of garbage and solid wastes abounding within the corner with flies rodents and even cockroaches feasting in it. After walking a few steps away, shame enveloped your entirety after seeing your feet covered with mud due to the unpaved shoddy road that was recently drenched by the rain. Suddenly, you felt sorry for your brother who together with your undernourished classmates, is listening to their teacher inside a shanty pent—up from plastered cartons and pieces of plywood. What can be done to a community like this? What alterations can be made to alleviate those said distressing sight?

From here transpires the idea of community service. It is as if the most effective cure for the social cancers posing infections to the inhabitants of various communities. And this cure, so simple to offer and administer, traces its roots from within us. It is like a seed deeply unplanted within our hearts, just waiting to be watered by willingness and nurtured by the feeling of compassion and empathy for our indigent countrymen.

Still Want to Live? Help Stop Global Warming!!

Robert Son

Have your thoughts stirred up as your eyes glanced and passed upon the preceding statement above?
A little?-no way!, not at all?!-Mercy  on you!

Well, by the way who would just care about “Global Warming”? It is  just only the foremost, the worst and the gravest problem our dear planet is facing nowadays as we are continuously getting fascinated by the vain and mundane things the modern age endows upon us.

With global warming comes the unstoppable onslaught of myriad catastrophes, evident in the presence of super typhoons, droughts, tornadoes, snow storms, floods, wildfires, and other  weather disturbances which are just a few.

Truly, the above climate catastrophes are attributable to global warming; but how? In what way?

Since earth’s history, present were already some gases in the atmosphere which are called “greenhouse gases.” They had been named as such for they have the ability to absorb infrared radiation (heat). Its two major components Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and water vapor, with regards to their average annual temperature, have rarely varied by more than one Celsius degree over the past 10,000 years. Probably, this is because most of carbon dioxide released into the air is readily dissolved by  oceans or used by forest in food making; but with the blossoming of life on earth more and more greenhouse gases surfaced-  contributing incessantly to the rapid increase of carbon dioxide built up in the atmosphere. Thereby, an enhanced tendency for greenhouse gases to trap more heat.

Historically, the above-cited incident can be proven true way back to the industrial revolution where the need for energy to run machines as to boost mainly the fields of agriculture and  industry, has started to increase. To compensate the said large demand for energy, humans started burning fossil fuels not knowing that burning these fuels releases enormous amounts of greenhouse gases.

And now, our generation is somewhat like continuing the destructive, uneducated ways of our forebears, of our predecessors. We tend to exacerbate greenhouse gas emission  on our little but innumerable acts, which are then worsened by the advent of technological advancement. Evidently, the emission of CFCs (chlorofluoro-carbons) from the production of refrigerators, air conditioners, and even propelling agents of ladies hair spray and paints. CFCs, which are 15,000 times more efficient than carbon dioxide in warming the atmosphere, add up to the overburdened global emission of carbon dioxide that has reached  28 billion metric tons. Notwithstanding the fact that there are other greenhouse gases which submerge the east in warmer temperatures;viz, methane and nitrous oxide. Methane (CH4) or marsh gas, having a higher warmer impact than CO2, accounts for 20 percent of the green house gases in the atmosphere and is emitted by garbage decomposition, agricultural wastes, coal mining leaks, and natural gas production. The other, nitrous oxide, is emitted from nitrogen fertilizers, pesticides, bio mass burning, combustion process in cars, and  producing nitric acid.

Inarguably, from the above citings come the inference that we – humans – are the chief cause for the thriving of global warming in the earth’s existence. From the majority of activities, we send immense amount of invisible green house gases that envelopes and pollutes the upper atmosphere, locks heat inside and radiates it back to earth. As this heat warms the earth, there occur disruptions in the world’s climate system enabling the upsurge of catastrophic phenomena.

It is hard to imagine, but we cannot bring back our original beauty of our planet in just one day in just a simple wink of the eye. Now that global warming starts to swell to severity, we have to find ways with the help of our existing knowledge and available technologies to counteract its negative consequences immediately. Do we have to wait and embrace the wanton possibility of ending up in extinction?

No! – this is the big answer. Who, in the world, would like to be extinct? Indeed, it is urgent for us to awaken our deep sense of love on nature and look and explore for numerous, affordable, simple ways to deal with global warming because, through such, we can save the only  sanctuary – planet earth – where we live in.

We can help stop global warming if we will just take the Mass Rail Transit (MRT), ride a bike, or walk whenever and wherever is possible.

We can help stop global warming, if we will just plant in our backyards, or grow trees that absorb carbon dioxide.
We can help stop global warming if we will reduce, reuse, recycle recyclables. Whenever we do these actions, we send less trash and help save precious resources like trees and oil. Further, it will take less energy to make recycled products than to make new ones lesser energy usage, the better.

Now is the time to act; for no country, no city, and no town will be exemption to the threat posed by the global warming. Philippines, like all other countries, is endangered to considering that it consists many low-lying islands and areas vulnerable to the gradual rise of sea levels as glaciers and polar ice are being thawed by global warming. We are now attuned to the loaming menace of drastic inundation, water scarcity, hunger and disease problems, and health risks which includes heat stress entailed by heat waves, water – born, food – born, and vector – born diseases and respiratory diseases due to air pollution.

Rightful, therefore it is to affirm that we consider energy efficiency as we buy appliances. We also have to urge our policy makers to cut pollution from fuels by shifting to cleaner, renewable energy and alternatives – solar, wind, geothermal, are just a few. We have to mitigate the abnormal rising of world temperature by summoning from within ourselves that strong will to exert more effort in reducing volumes of green house gases until reach normal levels.

Our fight against global warming should not be left to governments and scientists alone for we have in our midst the wide – array of four billion people who can do each of their shares to help intensify the total effort. To perpetuate and brighten our existence and the existence of earth itself is our primary goal, as what God desires for us. Such can be fulfilled if only we will just stop global warming.
